Public Union for Gender Equality and Women’s Initiatives (GEWI) held a Round Table on “Domestic Violence and ‘Draft Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence of the Republic of Azerbaijan’

Public Union for Gender Equality and Women’s Initiatives (GEWI) held a Round Table on May 8, 2009 at 11 AM-12:30 PM at the Conference Hall of Caspian Plaza with financial support from Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation. The topic of the Round Table was “Domestic Violence and ‘Draft Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence of the Republic of Azerbaijan’.”

The purpose in holding the Round Table mainly was to bring the draft law on domestic violence into public discussion, join efforts in the field of improvement of this draft law through exchange of opinions and to play a stimulating role to the adoption of the draft law.

Another purpose in holding the Round Table was to present the Commentary a US based NGO Advocates for Human Rights did with the initiative of GEWI on the draft law on Domestic Violence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Sector of Milli Majlis on Legislation on Human Rights and other corresponding commissions of Milli Majlis, State Committee on Family, Women and Children’s Affairs, Ombudsman office, Public Relations office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Public Relations office of the Republic’s Head Prosecutor’s office, local NGOs working on the topic and other organizations working on women’s rights, representatives of international organizations and others were invited to the Round Table.

Mr. Emil Taghiyev, the head of Sector on Legislation on Human Rights of Milli Majlis, Elgun Safarov, a representative of State Committee on Family, Women and Children’s Affairs, Mahir Mammadov, from Ombudsman’s office, civil society representatives and others. Attended the Round Table.

As the date of the The Round Table – May 8 coincided with the occupation day of Shusha city of Karabakh, it was made open by remembering all of Azerbaijani compatriots killed during the capture by one minute silence. After that the event continued with the main topic. Although the event didn’t go according to the initial program as defined beforehand, it continued with heating discussions on domestic violence. Both the civil society representatives working in the field of domestic violence, as well as the representatives of corresponding state entities expressed their opinion on what has been done and which spheres need improvement in the draft law on domestic violence.

The next step GEWI is planning to do on domestic violence is to present the Commentary and recommendations done by Advocates for Human Rights with the initiative of GEWI to the Milli Majlis and lobbying for its adoption.
