Public Union for Gender Equality and Women’s Initiatives (GEWI) has held a Round Table on “Addressing Gender equality and women’s empowerment in European Commission Development Cooperation with Azerbaijan.”

Public Union for Gender Equality and Women’s Initiatives (GEWI) has held a Round Table on “Addressing Gender equality and women’s empowerment in European Commission Development Cooperation with Azerbaijan.” In the event, a presentation about GEWI and its activities was given and Advocacy Card prepared in the framework of “Development Cooperation and Gender” project held by International Gender Policy Network (IGPN) was presented. The Round table continued with discussions around the issue and the Advocacy card.

Within the framework of this advocacy activity, the IGPN has prepared twenty two Advocacy Cards for individual countries linked with IGPN, which includes Azerbaijan as well and one common Regional Advocacy Card. The aim of this advocacy work is to remind the European and national representatives of their policy commitments. The Advocacy Card for EC development cooperation with Azerbaijan firstly provides an overview of EU’s commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment. Secondly, the country Strategy Paper for Azerbaijan is examined in the context of the EU’s commitments to gender equality. Next, an assessment of major gender issues in Azerbaijan is presented. Finally, recommendations are proposed to the actors involved in various degrees in the preparation of the Country Strategy Paper: the EU officials, national government and civil society organizations.

The representatives from European Commission, related State agencies, including State Committe on Family, Women and Children’s Affairs, State Council for Support to NGOs, Ombudsman office, Human Rights section of Milli Majlis, international organizations, including embassies, as well as local NGO and Media participatd in the event. The Advocacy Card had been sent to all guests beforehand together with invitations.

Ms. Ulviyya Mammadova, the Executive Director of GEWI opened the event by presenting the organization and its activities in the form of power point slides and also briefly introduced the Advocacy Card to participants.

Among those making speech were Ms. Mehriban Vezir, Chairwoman of Eurointegration Committee of Azerbaijan who made a speech on Prioritities in European Neighborhood Policy and Eastern Partnership. Another speaker Ms. Mominat Omarova, board member of GEWI, also chairperson of Steering Committee of Council of Europe on Gender Equality made a speech on monitoring of application of recommendations of Council of Europe on gender equality by government and civil society. All speeches were followed by question and answer session and discussions on the subject. At the end of discussions, concrete recommendations have been made to achieve more effective result in efforts towards reaching gender equality.
