New Network has been established

26/11/2010

On November 26, 2010, Public Union for Gender Equality and Women’s Initiatives has held a Conference at Azerbaijan Human Rights House (30 Jafar Jabbarli street). The purpose in holding the Conference was to discuss the needs in establishing a Network of regional NGOs in Azerbaijan working on gender/women’s rights issues and what this Network can do to reach gender equality and promote women’s rights in the country.

There participated 36 representatives from total 30 regional NGOs. The geographic scope of participants included the regions of Azerbaijan, such as, Shaki, Shirvan, Guba, Imishli, Zagatala, Barda, Mingachevir, Jabrail (Jabrail IDPs settled in Bilasuvar), Nakhchivan, Kurdamir, Ganja, Lankaran, Sumgayit.

The Conference was made open with introductory speech by Ulviyya Mammadova, the chairperson of GEWI, followed by short presentation of participating organizations’ representatives about the work they are doing. After this the needs of regional NGOs in networking and general problems these organizations face discussed. It was identified during the discussions once again that there is a great need for such networking. Thus Public Union for Gender Equality and Women’s Initiatives – the initiator of the Conference suggested of establishement of such a network and informed the Conference participants how it can support the Network members.

Thus a Network of regional NGOs working on gender/women’s rights issues has been established in the Conference and initially was named Regional Women’s NGO Network.

The organizations that participated in the Conference were automatically registered as members of this newly established Network. Besides capacity building trainings for the members of this new Network offered by GEWI, other members of the Network also suggested initital activity areas for the effective work of the Network.

It was decided in the Conference that the next steps for the work of the Network – specifying the name of the Network and its structure and other activities will be done through an electronic group established for the members of this Network.

It should be noted that this newly established Network is the first and so far the only Network established between regional NGOs in Azerbaijan working on gender and women’s rights issues.
